The study of Cameroon languages and cultures in the country's secondary schools...

In 2008 the curricula of the cameroon languages, arts and culture was introduced in the first three
classes( form one, two and three for the anglo-saxon system and sixiem, cinquiem and quartiem for francophone system ) in seven secondary schools in the country. This was comming at a time when most countries had laid emphasis on the teaching of their national languages home and abroad.
For instance the chinese language was being thought at ENS Yaounde. What action has the government taken?

In the 2009/2010 academic year, the ministry of Higher education opened the department Cameroon Languages and cultures (Departement des Langues et cultures camerounais) at the Higher Teachers' Training College(ENS) Yaounde. It will be graduating its first badge of students with DIPES II in 2011
and DIPES I in 2013.

Better still, the ministry of secondary education organised a one week (10/10/10 to 16/10/10)seminar on 'Cameroon languages and cultures ' under the patronage of the Secretary of States for secondary Education- Ogouoa Foutso. Regional stake-holders such as newly appointed regional inspectors for Cameroon Languages and Cultures were also part of the seminar. He emphasised that the teaching of Cameroon's languages and cultures in Cameoon schools is an important vector of fostering national development. He also urged the the participants to use the competence acquired to transmit knowledge(savoire) to students with their know-how(savoir-faire) and be able to make others apply this knowlege(savoir faire-faire).

Cameroon has about 250 national languages. For now, about eight have been modelled and put in the curricula. They include:

  • Ewondo and Bassa in the centre region
  • Douala in the Littoral region.
  • Fufulbe in the Far north region.
  • Kom in the North-west region.
  • Boullu in the South region.
The secretary of state noted that begining studies in the mother tongue befor getting to ofiicial languages helps the student to better understand concepts since the language is the one they started with. Not only for study purpose ones language is a back bone of their culture and so can't be overlooked.
